Hyperpolis 3.0: Really Useful Media

Conference and Celebration
October 19th and 20th of 2006

We don't know enough about digital media as something other than a means to
an end, as “instrumental culture”, where culture itself —mainstream,
alternative, underground, or otherwise— is degraded to the status of tools
(some hard, some soft, all ware).

We know too much about media discourses as, on the one hand, “popular
culture”: alienated and commodified cultural forms; and on the other,
“cultural theory”: paranoid cosmologies of hyper-rhetoric, and the
ubiquitous inevitability of evil...

Hyperpolis: Really Useful Media will provide a forum for the discussion and
presentation of some positive contributions to the field, in light of these
chronic imbalances.

Call For Submissions – UNCOMFORTABLE ART

3rd Ward is a 20,000 sq. ft workspace and studio facility for artist and creative professionals whose work often crosses media boundaries and requires access to an adaptable atmosphere.

The Gallery at 3rd Ward draws its tone from the creative facilities surrounding it. Be it metalwork or sound, photography or movement, we are always seeking out the grey area between mediums. Collaborations and cross-media work receive the main spotlight, while innovation and humor hold their own.

Our role as part of the 3rd Ward team is to support artists in realizing their creative vision.

The Gallery at 3rd Ward is now looking for art works for a possible upcoming show in our 2007 roster. We are looking for artwork that brings out or reflects on a feeling of mental or physical discomfort, uneasiness, anxiety or suspenseful excitement and anticipation.
